I was right all along

Jeff slipped the pen out of her hand. He jotted down next to her first bullet: Wagner. Me. Denise. April, Human Resources. Patrick, Marketing. Hunter, Operations. He tapped the pen to the paper, making little dots as he tried to remember the rest of the department head names. Victoria frowned and grabbed the pen back from him. “We can go over this on the way.”

Once in the truck, she turned to a new sheet of paper. “Help walk me through how we make the generators. The generator links up to solar panels that are installed at the same time, right? And, whenever the solar energy reaches a certain level, it powers the generator, which shuts off your electricity for the consumer, thereby saving them money on their electricity bill.”

She wrote, Bright Green Solar. “CleanSpark was one company. I think they must’ve provided the spark plugs or something. They disappeared off the expense report. Jeff, correct me if I’m getting any of this wrong. Green Recoil made the recoil starter thing. EnviroGasket also comes to mind. I’m assuming they supplied the gaskets,” Victoria said. She slapped her forehead. “I can’t remember any more!”

Something nagged at the corner of his mind.

Jeff had started working in Earth Generator’s assembly department in the factory warehouse after graduating high school. He had continued to work there while he completed his degree at the community college. It wasn’t until he’d let some of the guys talk him into a Saturday skydive that he’d realized his dream to become a certified skydiving instructor. The first step had been to earn a bunch more money.

Thankfully, he’d talked with his supervisor, who’d put in a good word at the corporate offices. They hired from within before advertising publicly, which had worked in his favor. He’d found himself pushing forms in Human Resources. From there, it had been a slow but steady climb to a department supervisor.

He could see some of the assembly lines in his head but not specific parts. Didn’t they put together their own gaskets? The names of the companies on Victoria’s list...they sounded too...too perfect. He looked in the rearview mirror and stiffened.

Victoria spun in her seat to look out the rear window. “What is it?” She gasped.

“I know. I see it, too, but we don’t know for sure if it’s a red Range Rover. We are too far away to tell for certain. We need to stay calm. Besides, they don’t know this truck.”

“He’s coming up too fast, don’t you think?”

“That’s what concerns me,” Jeff admitted. “Turn around and act natural. We’re going to take a sharp turn up ahead and see if he follows.”

Victoria did as he asked and even sank deeper into her chair. Jeff veered onto a gravel road faster than he should have and fought to keep the steering wheel straight.
